Tiger, one of our close friends, is currently out of town building his empire but before he went, he took Anne, Jinho and I to Jeju Island for a last hurrah! Tiger has been a very important friend of mine over the last few years, so I was especially glad to have some quality time before we had to part ways.
Anne and I had been to Jeju Island once before, during Chuseok in our first year here, but it was nothing like the style in which Tiger showed us around!
We stayed for 2 nights, and in a different place each night. When Tiger said he'd organized the pension ( which is kind of like a bed and breakfast I guess) we knew it would be nice ( that's his style) but we didn't imagine we'd be staying at resorts!
Both places were lush, but my personal fave was Olleh resort, where we stayed the first night. We stayed in a private suite, complete with its own inground, heated pool and hot tub made from lava stone. The resort staff set up a BBQ for us to grill dinner on and lit the fire inside so we could roast 고구마 (sweet potato). We had a great night, relaxing and swimming and just hanging out. The next morning, Anne and I enjoyed foot massages Tiger had booked for us! Seriously- it was amazing!
We drove around Jeju in the minivan Tiger had rented and took in the sights, ate some Jeju mandarins and discovered that if you're rich enough, you an do a thing called 'glamping' ( camping + glamour) where you are in a tent that has a fire, bed etc and is all organized on turf- who knew that such a thing existed?!
The second night, we stayed at a place by the sea that was more 'modern condo' style. On the first floor, the lounge and kitchen opened to the inground pool, and was complete with 노래방 (karaoke) and a drop down projector screen to watch movies! The second floor had a bedroom and spa, and the third floor had a jacuzzi outside- which is where we started the chillaxing^^
Later in the night we went to Tiger's cousin's raw fish restaurant. (Tiger's parents were originally from Jeju, but moved to Seoul before he was born. He still has an uncle and cousin in Jeju and will begin building a pension (b&b) on some land next to his cousin's restaurant later this year.)
Dinner was really good. Raw fish has a texture that certainly isn't for everyone, but if you an get past it, it's really yummy! I also tried some sea cucumber for the first time and surprised Tiger by actually eating some of the live octopus! ( I just had to wait for it to stop wriggling!)
After dinner, we went back to the pension and enjoyed some more time in the pool, showing off our hand stand abilities - unsurprisingly, Tiger was the best - he walked the entire length of the pool on his hands!^^
This was Tiger's last chance to relax before spending the next month building his new bar in Changwon ( a 30 minute bus ride from Busan). It's the first bar that Anne and I won't be at the opening for, for the last few years. It's sad for us because the Thursday Party gang have been like family to us and we're just as proud of their success as they are. Here's to hoping this store will be even more successful than the previous ones!
